Dry needling is a newer treatment which has evolved over the last few decades. It is also sometimes called intramuscular stimulation. It focuses exclusively on treating musculoskeletal and neuromuscular pain by releasing trigger points which are areas of knotted or hard muscle. 

Acupuncture restores energy flow, while dry needling targets dysfunctional muscle trigger points.
